The Benefits of Getting Out of Your Comfort Zone

Sometimes we have to take risks for us to achieve success.

People have each of their own comfort zones from the television shows we watch, to the kind of coffee we usually order from Starbucks, to the favorite chair we sit on while reading our books of choice.

Doing things in routine gives us comfort because we’re already familiar with how the task is done and how it will turnout.  We no longer fear the possibility of failure because we’ve been accustomed to doing the said tasks.  When we’re doing the same thing over and over, it becomes so easy it almost becomes second nature already.  And who wouldn’t want that kind of comfort?

I was with my first job for ten years and I wouldn’t have moved had our team not been dissolved.  I do value loyalty just so we’re clear but in those ten years, there were better opportunities that came that I didn’t grab because I was comfortable where I was. My job was in a call center back then but we were on day shift.  Most of the call centers here in Manila work during the night but the team I was a part of observed normal business hours and days off.

Why else would I move out if I’m getting paid well and enjoying the schedule of this job?  The answer to that question is that had I chosen to move somewhere else, I may have learned and developed new skills that can add up to my credentials.

That’s the point in getting out of our comfort zones.

We need to improve and not be complacent with where we are at the moment.

Here are some of the benefits we can get from getting out of our comfort zones.

 

We become more confident

Taking a risk is something not all people are willing to do.  So for you to take the plunge is already achievement in itself.  By taking risks, we develop confidence in ourselves that whatever we set out to do, we are going to do until we meet our goal.  It takes balls to start learning and doing something in unfamiliar territory.

When you take risks, there’s a 50% chance that you will fail and a 50% chance that you will succeed.  The fact that you took the leap with your eyes closed proves that you have faith in yourself that you can actually do it.

 

You get to enjoy while learning

When you decide to reinvent yourself by getting out of your comfort zone, you are setting yourself up for something you’re not familiar with.  Your determination to succeed in this new venture will keep you going.

If you decided to put up a new business, you will certainly want to know the ins and outs of being an entrepreneur.  You will read all the books, interview other entrepreneurs, and learn as much as you can.  The challenge will excite you because you’ll try to prove to yourself that you can do it and you’re going to do everything to reach your goal.

 

You become more productive

Doing something in routine gives us that advantage of getting things done easily which gives us time to sit back and relax which is not a bad thing but doing something new helps us spend our time more productively because we have our hands full.

 

You learn to be more patient

Doing something new and unfamiliar will not get us success overnight.  We’ll have to take it one step at a time until this new task becomes a new comfort zone.  It may even become a case of trial and error because it’s all new to you.  If you fail and try again each time, your patience is being stretched to its limit.

 

It brings out potential you never thought you had

Dealing with unfamiliar waters will help us push our boundaries to places we never thought we can get to.  The problem with comfort zones is you learn to set a limit for yourself in terms of what you can do.  Trying something new will push you to your limits and bring out the best in you.

 

It prevents you from becoming lazy

Comfort zones has a the tendency to make us lazy.  Once we’re used to doing something, we develop the habit of choosing to do something because it’s easy.  We become relaxed and too comfortable by always choosing to do things that will not let you exert an effort.

 

Without change, there will be no progress.  Trying something new does not only refer to tasks or jobs which is usually the reference.  Like I mentioned above, the smallest things that would break a routine is already considered getting out of the comfort zone.

Successful people always find ways to reinvent themselves and try something different.  They’re always hungry for knowledge and for learning new skills.

Michael Jordan, in his rookie years was known as a Dunker, a highlight reel, but he was smart enough to know that he’s not gonna be forever young and that his jump won’t be as high as it was before so he developed other dimensions of his game.  In the years before his retirement, he had a decent outside shot already as well as that killer fade away jumper that made other men cry which he didn’t have before.

So don’t be afraid to try something new.  You can’t keep doing the same thing over and over.  You need to stay hungry and keep on learning new things.
