“A lack of clarity could put the brakes on any journey to success.”
― Steve Maraboli,
Clarity is defined as the state or quality of being clear. Clearness in terms of perception and understanding. The concept is that simple. It’s direct to the point and as simple and as self-explanatory as definition is, you’ll be surprised how most people doesn’t have clarity in their lives or several aspects of it.
How do I know?
Because most of the people who come to me for advice about career, relationships, and life altogether finds it difficult to answer the one question I would always ask before I give my advice:
“What do you want?”
I get a couple of different reactions to this question every time. You have those who seem to have not understood me and asks me to repeat the question. There are also those who almost has an immediate answer but stops before saying a word, thinks intently, and then let’s out an analyzing “hmmmmm”.
The question will definitely be difficult for someone who’s unclear of what he wants. It will be difficult for someone who has no specific direction. Sadly, most of us go through life without the needed curiosity to ask ourselves what we really want, We just go through the motion and drift through life like a dead fish. Sometimes we think we got life all figured out and that we know exactly what to do but when we begin to experience chaos and things don’t happen the way we expect them to, we suddenly realize that there’s more to life than what you’ve seen in the movies or read in your books.
How important is clarity and how can it help us to lead awesome lives?
It lets you figure out what you want
Do you have a five-year plan or a ten-year plan?
You’ll probably answer this question with the standard answer of “getting rich, buying your own house, driving your new car, getting promoted to CEO, or simply having your own family. There isn’t a wrong answer actually. All of them can be right but if you dig deeper and reflect a little more, are these really what you want?
We all have the tendency to go on autopilot especially if everything’s going according to what we want and what makes us comfortable and in doing so, we drift through life, working our asses off without really knowing exactly what we’re working hard for. You have to be more specific and you won’t get as specific as possible if you don’t have clarity.
Figure out what you want. Determine what would really make you happy and give you the fulfillment you’ve dreamed of and set your sights on that/those things.
It makes goal setting a lot easier
Knowing what you want makes the goal setting process a lot easier for you because you now have direction and vision and being certain about it will help you decide the steps you need to take to meet your goals. It will inspire you to take action until you realize these goals you’ve set.
If your goal is to be financially independent in five years time, you’ll do everything in your power to settle all your debt and save as much money as you can to achieve this goal. You’ll only buy the things you need, stop using your credit cards and put money in the bank more than you ever did. You know what you want and as long as you’re clear with what you want, you can never go wrong.
You’ll have better relationships
Love will always have its risk especially if you don’t know the other person that much but nothing can be worse than not having the clarity on the type of person you want to be with.
So he’s cute but he doesn’t cook and you still went out with him because you’re physically attracted to him but then you realize HE DOESN’T COOK and it turns you off, you begin to lose interest and finally you break up. You then ask yourself, are you looking for a handsome guy or a guy who knows how to cook or both?
This may sound trivial but you must bear in mind that the little details matter a lot so before jumping into a relationship with someone, ask yourself more than ten times.
“Is this really what I want?”
If you can’t answer your question with conviction and finality, then that’s probably not the person you’re looking for.
It helps you be in control
If you’re clear about everything, you know where to take your ship. You’ll have the confidence to take your life to the direction you want because you know EXACTLY what you want. You won’t be drifting through life because you’ll be LIVING IT.
I didn’t have clarity before and I was definitely not in control. I stayed on a job I didn’t feel passionate about for so long and I got into debt without finding a remedy to my situation. Life took me wherever it went. I let life control me instead of the other way around. Clarity makes us become more intentional.
It inspires you to become better
Getting clear on your goals and dreams in life will help you become a better version of you because of your determination to reach those goals. You’ll read all the books, study all the journals, and attend all the seminars you can get your hands on to realize these dreams and these actions you take and the knowledge you gain makes you grow as a person.
It gives you peace of mind
Having a clear vision and knowing where you’re headed gives you somewhat of an assurance that you will get to your destination no matter what bumps and bruises you meet along the way. You may worry a little but not to the point where you’ll stress yourself out. This assurance that everything will fall right where they should gives you the peace of mind and courage to just push forward and take risks.
