You can’t expect to live a positive life by hanging with negative people. – Joel Osteen
We’re all familiar with the story of Tarzan, the young boy who was raised by a tribe of apes after the death of his biological parents. He lived all his life with the Mangani Great Apes that he grew up to be just like them. His ways, his mannerisms, his attitude. He was literally an ape in human form. He later on experienced what it was like to live in modern civilization but eventually rejected it and moved back to the jungle which he considered home.
The people we spend time with has a big influence in our lives. They shape the way we live our lives and help change our beliefs which is why it is very important to choose the people we spend time with. It is critical for us to be friends with the right people and to be in the right company all the time because just like Tarzan, we become what they are without us knowing it. We may adopt their ways, their manner of speaking, or the way they deal with people because we get accustomed to their behavior due to our constant interaction.
I remember back in third year high school when I first got admitted to the “honor” section. This was, as they said, the cream of the crop of the entire batch and you had to be able to meet a certain average for you to be included in this group. I was lucky enough to be included on that year and I would have to say, it took me quite some time to get used to the culture there. I wasn’t used to holding my book while taking my break or brainstorming with my classmates instead of chatting. I felt different and I felt like an outsider but being with the same people everyday made me adapt their ways. In a short span of time, I was already studying during breaks and found myself exchanging ideas with my classmates during our free time. Their study habits were contagious and being in this section was highly beneficial for me looking back because I learned to be competitive and industrious.
Being in the company of good people has a huge effect in both our happiness and eventually, our success which is why you should be spending time with these types of people.
Good people have good morals
Someone who has integrity and has a positive attitude. Someone who choose to do the right thing in a given situation and has nothing but good intentions toward his fellow human being.
Good people are positive
A person who has hope and an overall optimist. One who sees the good in everything and everyone he or she encounters. Someone who would be supportive of your dreams and will encourage you to push your self to achieve more.
Good people are dreamers
Someone who has ambition and not content with being mediocre. Someone who wants to become successful someday and one who dares to be unique and not care what other people may say for as long as he or she can get closer to his or her dream.
Good people inspire
This person is a testament that nothing is impossible with hardwork and perseverance. He or she is your role model and someone whose footsteps you would like to follow.
Good people are family-oriented
A person whose number one priority is family. Someone whose loyalty is to his or her family and someone who does what he or she does for the sake of his or her family and their happiness.
Conversely, these are the kinds of people you should be getting rid of:
An overall negative person who complains for just about anything. Every time he or she opens his or her mouth, this person will always say something negative about the people around him, about work, about home, and just about everything he can get his hands on that does not agree or benefit them. This person is not accountable for anything and will always find someone to blame for his shortcomings.
People who possess a victim mentality. Someone who treats themselves as a victim of every circumstance they are dealt with as if everyone and the whole world decided to gang up on them and put them down.
Someone who lacks hope for the future and would always think of a negative outcome. Someone who, instead of supporting your dreams would try to hold you back and discourage you from achieving more. People who have no dreams and one who is content on what the world brings instead of deciding what future he or she want for themselves.
People who smile at you and act like your friend but says negative things about you when you’re not around. People who like to gossip and bring down people who are on the way up. They find joy in destroying people instead of building them up.
People without conscience
Someone who will resort to illegal means to achieve their goals. Someone who has weak morals and someone who does not have the best intentions for the people around them. Someone who lacks integrity.
So what would you do if you have people like this in your life at present? My short answer is to get rid of them. Distance yourself from these people because they are in the way of your happiness and success. I’m not trying to tell you to categorize people but human beings have the ability to either affect or infect fellow human beings.
If you want to live a happy life, you need to be around people who pretty much have the same goals as you are, one of them being happiness. If you want to have a great family life, you should not be hanging out with people who engage in extra-marital affairs. If you want to be successful in what you do, go find people who have done it before you. Learn as much as you can from these people and apply what you learned in your everyday life.
We must always put in mind that we become the people we spend time with so choose to be with those who will bring out the best in you, who will encourage you and celebrate you.
Question: Has there ever been a time when you had to distance yourself from a bunch of people you’ve been hanging out with because you felt that that they’re having a bad effect on you?
