11 Decisions You’ll Be Glad You Made

Make the right decision now and have no regrets

“Not making a decision is actually a decision. It’s the decision to stay the same.”
― Lysa TerKeurst, The Best Yes: Making Wise Decisions in the Midst of Endless Demands

Every decision we make has a profound effect on our future.  It will all go down to either regretting such decision or being happy you made it which is of course, what we are all after.

The choices you make today has consequences that may come back to haunt you which is why it is very important that we weigh all our options carefully before making a decision.  Consider the pros and cons, the upside and downside, and the effect it will have on you, your family, and your future.

Below are decisions you will be glad you made when you look back 5 years from now:

1, Stepping out of your comfort zone

We’ve all been through this phase of resisting change and opting to stick with what we are familiar with even if it’s starting to become counter-productive for us.  You can only see true progress once you start doing something different and new.

If you find it difficult doing something, the better because it is through these difficult tasks that we learn new skills and develop our creativity.  In the end, this will be one of the best decisions you will ever make.

2. Saying “No” when the situation calls for it

One of the most difficult things for a person to do is to say “No” to others even when their hearts tell them to do so.  It is in our nature to feel obligated to please everyone even if doing so steals our chance for happiness.  Living your life always trying to please everyone will keep you from achieving the happiness and success you deserve.

Take ownership of your life and stop trying to please everyone because doing so is like living somebody else’s life.

3. Spending more time with your family

Life is short and no one knows what the future holds. You can be perfectly healthy today but with a snap of a finger, life can take a turn for the worse.  Your kids will only be children for a couple of years, wouldn’t you like to be there for them and watch them grow?

Time is such a precious commodity.  Time lost can never be brought back so do the most with the time you have today.  Spend time with your family, go on vacation, spend your weekends in the mall, enjoy life.  While it is understandable for you to work hard and spend more time at work because you want to earn a decent living, you must also keep in mind of the things you are giving up for money.  At the end of day, ask yourself.  Is it all worth it?

4. Saving money

Debt is one of the leading causes of depression and you will be doing yourself a big favor if you start saving money by checking your spending habits.  Prioritize the things you spend money on.  Purchase those you need over the things you want and use cash as much as possible.

I love what financial guru and leadership expert Dave Ramsey said about people in debt.  He said people who are in debt are considered normal that’s why his advice is to be weird and unique by living debt-free.  Financial decisions are crucial so you have to be careful when making one.

5. Being with the right company

I believe in the saying that “birds with the same feather, flock together” and this is especially true with the kind of friends we hang with.  You cannot underestimate the influence your friends have over you because this very same influence can push you to do things you don’t normally do all in the name of friendship.

Would you rather spend time with friends who are jobless and lazy compared to friends who are professional and successful career-wise?  Be withe people who will push you to take action rather than be with friends who will pull you down.

6. Being kind to people and building relationships

“People don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care.”

Treating people right, being kind and building relationships with the people you meet will benefit you somewhere down the line.  You see relationships are like businesses where you invest, take risks, and get a return on your investment someday.

People remember acts of kindness especially those that were done towards them.  People you’ve been kind to will not hesitate to return the favor if and when the time comes when you are the one in need that’s why it is very important not to burn bridges.

7. Staying healthy

Eating right and exercising will do you good in the next five to ten years so do your best to stay healthy now so you can reap the benefits of good health later.  With the various diseases that have been coming out lately, the best thing you can do is to stay in shape and make your body strong enough to resist such sicknesses.

Develop healthy habits like getting enough sleep, stopping smoking, and getting the right amount of exercise.  Go to the doctor regularly and have yourself checked.

8. Staying loyal to your family

Temptation is everywhere and the best way to avoid it is by not getting yourself in a position to give in to it.   Prevention will always be better then cure especially if you don’t trust yourself enough to withstand the lure of temptations.  Think of the effect this will have on your kids and your spouse.

Is it worth risking five minutes of pleasure at the cost of a lifetime of happiness?  Can your conscience take it to see your kids being a product of a broken family five years from now?

Think of the lives you will destroy by being stupid and selfish.

9. Not listening to your detractors

One of the things that holds you back is your tendency to get distracted and affected by the bad things people say about you.  There will always be people who will try to pull you down and throw dirt at you and the best way to deal with them is to ignore them.  Don’t let their words discourage you from reaching your goals.  Instead, do your best to prove them wrong.

Always remember that the best revenge is success.

10. Improving yourself

“Leaders read and readers lead.”

If there’s a better time for you to go for self-improvement, that time is now. Information has never been this accessible with internet and technology working together.  You can get access to information anywhere, anytime through your smart phone and tablet.  You can download ebooks and listen to audiobooks in these very same devices.

Take advantage of this accessibility.  Improve your skills and absorb as much information as you can to better yourself because one is never too old to learn new tricks.

11.  Thinking and staying positive

One of the things highly successful people have in common is that of having a positive attitude and mindset.  Positive thinking invokes hope in everything that we do and every event that happens to us.  You cannot expect to be successful if you do not have the faith and hope that you will achieve what you’re aiming for.  Trust me, this is one of the best decisions I made.

This applies even for things that you consider negative such as losing a job or failing in business.  With a positive attitude, you can turn such events into a positive experience by drawing inspiration from it.

Your future and how you want it to be are all in your hands.  The choices you make determine the outcome so keep an open mind and think of the consequences of your choices before making a decision.

Absolutely agree with every word and if we choose to follow these points we will do well. I guess the difficulty is learning to be something different to what we have been programmed to be – by society & significant others. Awareness is everything, aware of who we are, who we want to be & that we have a choice in everything we do!

Thank you for your comment Columba. Definitely agree. Life is always about choices and these choices dictate what the future holds for us which is why we should be very careful and vigilant in making crucial decisions.
