“It’s not about perfect. It’s about effort. And when you bring that effort every single day, that’s where transformation happens. That’s how change occurs.”
― Jillian Michaels
It’s been a very busy week for me at work and I barely had the time to write new material for the blog. We’ve been outsourced by our previous company (which seems to be a growing trend) and being the manager, I have to be there to facilitate our move not only to the new company but to a new building too. It’s like literally starting over.
Moving is not really new to me. I’ve had a previous team I managed move to a new place around two years ago too so that experience made this new one a lot easier.
Everything wasn’t perfect though in that previous team. I was asked to manage a team without promotion or raise and I did that for two years which kind of makes me regret that decision. I felt like I was used and taken advantage of and that all my efforts went to waste but all that changed with this recent transfer. Looking back, I can now understand that none of our efforts go to waste and that everything we do, even the little ones, has a compounding effect as time goes by.
Charge it to Experience
One of the things we have to put in mind is that everything we do has a reward. Sometimes, it’s not the kind of reward we are looking forward to but if you keep an open mind, you will realize that the reward may have been there all along, staring you in the face without you even noticing.
It’s not always about the money or prestige. The experience you gain from your failures make you stronger, tougher and smarter than ever before so use that to your advantage.
Do it for the Right Reasons
If you’re going to pursue something, you must decide first why you are after it. What is your reason for doing this thing? Is it because you want your family to be proud of you? Is it because of money? Is it because of the fame it will bring you?
You will feel like you’ve wasted time and effort if you are doing something for the wrong reasons but if you are doing it because you love it and because it’s been your dream ever since, you won’t even entertain that thought.
I’ve always said in my previous posts that there’s no such thing as overnight success. It will take time. It may take, months, years, or even decades before you can get to where you want to be. The secret is to continue to do everything you can to reach your goal. Every step is equally important and if you do it over and over everyday for the next three or five years, success may no longer be as far behind as it did before.
Even the most successful businesses took years before they became empires. People who move up the corporate ladder take years before getting to the top. The common denominator between the two is action. Non-stop action that is.
Avoid Feeling Entitled
We have an old saying that you reap what you sow which is absolutely true when applied in our daily lives. The problem with most people is that every time they go the extra mile, they feel like they deserve more than what they are getting. They feel entitled to something greater than what they are already getting.
I’ve been there before. I used to feel that what I was doing was special and that it required appreciation and reward but looking at the bigger picture, I soon realized that it was not something out of the ordinary. Feeling entitled to something bigger will indeed make you feel that your efforts were all for nothing but the truth of the matter is, your efforts already meant something.
Let the Reward Come Instead of Looking Forward to It
A friend once told me that promotion should not be chased because it will come when we least expect it and this resonated in me so much because I used to be the kind of person who works hard on something but immediately expects to be rewarded for it and I found out that the more you chase it, the more it will run away from you.
Just keep working hard and don’t stop to look if someone appreciates what you’re doing. Everything you do will eventually yield its benefits when the time is right.
None of your efforts go to waste and every time you feel that way, just compare yourself to a business. The more you invest on yourself, the bigger you get. Every little penny you put into a business has significant value and so does every little thing you do to improve yourself. Invest in yourself and keep on doing because sooner than later, you will be reaping the benefits.
Have you ever felt like your efforts are being put to waste? Why? What did you do to stop feeling that way?
