“He who has a why to live for can bear almost any how.”
― Friedrich Nietzsche
I was listening to one of Robert Kiyosaki’s audiobooks called Choose to be Rich and there was a chapter in the book where he discussed the importance of knowing our why and how it helps us determine the how. I loved it so much that I made it the topic of this blog post because I couldn’t wait to share it with you guys. It is also very timely considering that everyone is still busy coming up with their new year’s resolution.
Robert couldn’t have said it any better when he said that for you to know the how, you have to know your why first. It definitely hit a nerve and I’m pretty sure that each and every one of you will be able to identify with this. Why?
Because most of us spend a lot of time trying to decide how in the world we can fulfill our dreams. How can I settle my debt? How can I earn a million dollars? How can I buy my dream house? I’m pretty sure you have more how’s left under your sleeve and that’s perfectly fine. It’s going to be quite difficult however, to look for the ways we can satisfy that question without the proper motivation and this is where Robert Kiyosaki made me a bigger fan that I already am.
What did he say exactly? He simply said the title of this blog post and that’s gold right there because it is absolutely true that if you know the purpose why set out to do something, it will be easier for you to find how to do it because your motivation in doing such task is clearly defined.
Let’s take the most popular HOW question everyone usually asks. How do I get rich?
I’m sure you can come up with more than three answers at the top of your head when you hear that question. You most probably came up with the following:
- I will invest my money
- I will come up with my own business
- I will buy a lottery ticket
- I will work hard
- I will get an extra job
That’s all good but where do you begin? These things are easier said than done. Where will you invest your money? What business will you come up with? What other job will you be taking on?
Instead of getting answers, you are now faced with more questions. Let’s change the dynamics. This time, the question to ask is why do I want to get rich? Here’s what I can come with immediately:
- I want to retire early
- I want to spend more time with my family
- I want to live a comfortable life
- I want to be able to buy everything I want
- I want to travel
If you asked me, my answer to this question is because I want to spend more time with my family. So what do I do? How do I meet this goal? I work hard to educate myself. I read books, listen to motivational tapes, and learn as much as I can about online business models. I blog, I build relationships through social media, and pretty soon, I’m planning to write a book. All of these came to me because my dream is to be able to work from home and spend more time with the family and I believe I can achieve all these through an online business.
Adding purpose to a goal makes a big difference especially if you really want that goal badly because it motivates you to push yourself to your limits and it enhances your creativity. It fosters determination and a willingness to sacrifice one’s pleasures if it meant achieving that goal.
One of Philippine basketball’s greatest rags-to-riches stories is that of Marc Pingris. He came from humble beginnings and back when he was still a rookie from the province trying his luck in Manila, he experienced difficulties that almost brought me to tears while watching a documentary about his life.
As the story goes, he was then a practice player who earns a hundred pesos per day and in the barracks he stayed in, food is available on a first-come, first-serve basis. It happened one day that he arrived late, hungry and tired from practice and there was no more food left and he didn’t have any money. What he found were leftovers and out of sheer desperation, he ate what’s left of them as tears rolled down his cheeks. He told himself from that day on that someday, he will be able to eat delicious food. Food that he only got to taste in his imagination. Where is he now?
Well, all his hard work and sacrifices worked out for him. He’s one of the most popular cagers in the Philippines today and he’s living his dream. He achieved all these because he was motivated. He had a WHY and this WHY showed him the path to success.
