How the Law of Attraction Can Change Your Life

law of attraction

What is the law of attraction and how can it change your life?

“Here’s the problem. Most people are thinking about what they don’t want and they’re wondering why it shows up over and over again.” – John Assaraf

I’m a big movie fan and back in 2006, there was this one movie/documentary that everyone (at least in my circle) was talking about.  It was a film called The Secret and believe it or not, I only got to watch this amazing piece just this year.

The movie centers around the law of attraction, a philosophy which presents the idea that focusing on positive or negative thoughts can bring about positive or negative experiences or outcomes to our lives.  In short, like attracts like.

If you are into personal development and self-help, this is a gem of a movie worth keeping in your DVD library and showing your future grandchildren.  Although for the most part the movie shared practical tips on how to enjoy and live our lives, there were also parts that dealt with a bit of magical belief because according to some of the resource people who shared their ideas in the interviews, the universe will find a way to make things happen if we believe and focus on the results we want to happen.

I loved this movie and in whole honesty, applying the mindset discussed in it changed my life in a positive way.

How?

Well, remember when I told you guys how I got into this whole blogging and personal development thing?

Yes, the one where I dug myself into a deep hole called DEBT and cowardly blamed everything and everyone else except myself for getting in trouble.  That was point when I realized that I need to make changes if I am going to get out of this mess.

Looking back, I realize now that the law of attraction has worked both FOR me and AGAINST me and this is how it went:

Focus on what you want more than what you don’t want

This was one of the memorable quotes Jack Canfield mentioned in the movie.  Instead of dwelling on negative things that happened to you, focus on what you want instead.

When I got into debt, I was miserable.  I was worried all the time and I felt helpless.  What made it worse was that I somehow wanted people’s sympathy (inadvertently though) because whenever I meet a friend or colleague who asked me how I was doing, I would always tell them how we were barely getting by and how insurmountable my pile of debt was.

“Oh well, barely surviving.” was my frequent reply and if we look at that Jack Canfield quote above, I was doing the exact opposite.  I was more focused on what I don’t want.

This is entirely my fault because I just can’t shut my mouth about the mess I’m going through.

If you have a problem, take your mind off it and stop talking about it with other people.  Think about the ways you can get out of it and how you’re going to celebrate after you conquered this problem.

Fast fact: Don’t you find it weird that the people who always talk and worry about sickness or diseases end up getting sick themselves?  Right?

Ask…Believe…Receive

One of the themes the law of attraction promotes is that if we ask and believe, that everything is possible.  It states that if we badly need something and we believe whole-heartedly that it is achievable that the universe will find a way to make it happen.

Well, it all sounds like mumbo-jumbo right?

Yeah, that’s how I perceived it when I first heard it I mean come on, really?  The universe?

Believe it or not, I spoke too soon.

I thought to myself, what the heck, what do I have to lose?

I began adopting this mindset after watching the movie.  I started thinking and obsessing about what it’s like to finally be debt-free and what actions I can take to make it happen.  I began talking less about the negative aspect of my life and always stayed happy and contented.  I stopped worrying and told myself repeatedly that this will all be over and that I can make it happen soon.

Call it luck or coincidence but a series of events happened in my career that I never expected.  I’m not gonna go into details but to make the story short, I’m about to cut my debt to more than half within this month.

I’m not out of the woods yet but these events spells HUGE progress in my book.

So if you’re trying to lose weight and there seems to be no progress, stop dwelling on your failures.  Stop saying “I’m fat” or “I’ve done everything but nothing seems to work.  I’ll never lose weight.”

Instead, think of how it would feel like to have a six-pack or how awesome it would be to fit in those bikinis just in time for the summer.  Visualize it and when your passion to get to that result is strong enough, believe me, you will lose weight.

Visualization

In Napoleon Hill’s best-selling book Think and Grow Rich, he said that if you want to be a millionaire, you have to visualize and imagine how it would feel like to hold a million dollars in your hand and do that everyday.  Once this vision starts to get into your subconscious, all your actions from that day moving forward will be directed into reaching that goal.

This is one of the lessons taught in the movie and one of my favorite part was when John Assaraf told about his personal experience about creating a vision board.

As the story goes, in 1995 he made his vision board where he pasted pictures of all his goals and everything that he wanted to achieve in life.  Five years later, they moved into their new home and when he and his son opened one of the boxes, he uncovered that vision board he created five years back and it brought him to tears when he saw the picture of the house he pasted there because it was the exact same house they have moved in.

Vision boards is just one of the ways.  If you want to get your dream car someday, why not pay it a visit, test drive it, feel what it’s like to sit in those leather seats and to smell that new-car fragrance.  Make these visions motivate you and inspire you to take action and realize your goals.

If you haven’t seen the movie yet, watch it now and apply the lessons it imparts because it is absolutely life-changing.  Incorporate the law of attraction in your life because it really does make a big difference and again, what have you got to lose?

Congratulations on cutting your debt in half!!! I’ve always struggled with the law of attraction stuff because the way a lot of people explain it just sounds so “woo woo” to me. But I think what you said in this post makes perfect sense: changing your thoughts changes your actions. And I think that opportunities are all around us, but they don’t actually appear unless we are ready for them. Anyway, thanks for the reminder to keep working on my thoughts!

Yes Mary, I definitely understand where you’re coming from because there are parts of the law of attraction that seem, as you said, “woo woo”. The most important part of it in my point of view is its basic principle of attracting the right kind of energy through the right kind of mindset. Our thoughts influence our actions so if we always put on a positive mindset, positive things should come our way. Appreciate you taking the time to read and comment.

What a simple piece of life advice that anyone can apply – focus on what you want, not what you don’t want.
You can take that into any situation, no matter what you’re doing, and it will change your life.
The Secret draws a lot of criticism because there’s no science or ‘real’ research behind it. I say experiment with this principle in your own life and become your own scientist. Amazing things will happen.
    Great read Noel.

Thanks Joe! We can apply the law of attraction through practical means by living a positive lifestyle. Positive acts attracts positive events. Negative ones attract negative things as well.

      Have a great weekend!

Read an interesting article once about how the subconcious can’t really comprehend negative statement, such as “can’t” and “not”. So when you think “I will not eat candy” your subconcious hears “I will eat candy”. It might therefore be important to think in positive ways about what you want rather than what you don’t want.

The vision board one is quite powerful, actually wrote a post myself on it this morning.

Thanks for your comments Nathan. i couldn’t agree more. The law of attraction will only work if we will take action. We can’t expect the universe to do the work for us towards the accomplishment of our dreams. In the end, it will still be up to us whether this principle will work or not.

I sometimes wonder how things and events, that I need in my life, seem to happen at the exact times I’ve needed them, and this is where the law of attraction really resonates with me.

The problem I think with “the secret” is that people believe that they can just think something and it will happen, and then when it doesn’t instantly work, they give up instead of trying a little more. The secret + action towards your goals and life purpose will definitely bring results

Great share Noel! I remember when I first watched The Secret… it blew me away! And implementing those principles into my life has allows me to create everything I have today. So grateful that film was introduced to me!

Glad you liked it Alex. I don’t think I will be this hopeful have I not seen this movie. It’s one for the ages!

I liked the Secret, and is a great intro in the Law of Attraction. In my experience, mindfulness, combined with the transcension of the EGO (oneness) so your Heart Chakra opens, plus having a slight desire, tends to help the manifestation process more smoothly.
Having said that, good visualization helps re-programme your subcnonscious, making your behaviour change so you take more inspired action to create the life you are looking for.
    Thanks for posting

Thanks Julian! I loved the movie so much as well. Definitely a collector’s item because it’s not only inspiring but life-changing as well.

      Take care.

Loved the way you explained the LOA in such a simple way.

Combining what I know about the unconscious mind and the LOA though, I would suggest you don’t use debt-free anymore.

When I ask you to think about a pink-elephant free room, the first thing you mind pictures is a pink elephant. Our unconscious minds (where LOA happens) doesn’t process negatives. So when you say “debt-free”, you first picture debt in your unconscious mind.

calling it “abundance” or “financial freedom” or even “lots and lots of spending money” will work even quicker! And as an added benefit, it will help you beyond point zero as well.

“if we badly need something and we believe whole-heartedly that it is achievable that the universe will find a way to make it happen.”

I dont know how it happens but your right this is always true. Thanks for sharing

Thanks Orlando! The common misconception is that the universe will do everything but nothing would happen if there’s no action from our end. The Secret is a great movie because it’s inspiring and life-changing.

      Have a great week!
