How Do You Make the Most Out of the New Year?

new year

Do you want to make 2015 your best year ever?

“Hope smiles from the threshold of the year to come, whispering ‘it will be happier’…”

― Alfred Tennyson

A new year is upon us and just like the previous years, everyone’s preoccupied with their new year’s resolutions.  People want to lose weight, be more punctual, or be more responsible this 2015.  Others set out for much bigger goals like getting that much-needed promotion, buying a new house or finally owning that new car they’ve craved for all these years.

What does it take to have a meaningful year?  How can we make 2015 our best year ever?

Like I said in one of my previous post, I believe that people make their own luck and that the choices we make will still decide the kind of future we want to live in.  With that in mind, here are some valuable tips to help you make 2015 your most productive year:

Learn from Your Mistakes

Instead of dwelling on everything wrong that you did last year and blame yourself for your shortcomings, focus more on the lessons you learned.  Every failure you experienced have valuable life lessons you can apply in your everyday life.  It doesn’t have to go down to blame and regret.  These events should make you a better and stronger person.

The best lesson I learned from failure is that people come out better because of adversity because it pushes you to give your best effort.

Have a Plan

Okay so you have your new year’s resolution but do you have a concrete plan on how you would achieve them?  Writing it down or coming up with one would not be enough, you need to have a mapped out plan on how you will meet them.

Just like what we do in our jobs, our personal goals should also be SMART.  That is:

S – pecific

M – easurable

A – chievable

R – ealistic

T -imebound

These goals you have set would only be wishes if they do not follow the criteria above.  If you’re trying to lose weight, you need be specific with the weight you are looking to meet, you need to be able to measure your progress, and you need to set a time-table on when you would want to carry that desired weight.

Have everything written as much as possible so you won’t miss out on certain information.  Journal your progress on a regular basis so you can track your improvement and motivate yourself with the small wins.

Be Positive

Life happens to each and all of us and we all know that no one gets to stay on top all the time.  Trials and difficulties are bound to happen and it is crucial for all of us to maintain a positive outlook no matter what our circumstances are.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned about failure it is that everyone goes through it but no one stays in it for a long time.  It will all be over soon and like a wheel, life will take you back to the top once again at the right time.  You just have to be patient and never lose hope because if you do, then it’s game over.

You may be at your lowest point because you are buried in debt or maybe you are not getting that promotion you believe you’re due but if you stay positive and wait for the right time, you’ll see in the end that it will all work out when the time is right.

Look Forward and Take Advantage of the Opportunities

“A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.”

– Winston Churchill

The new year presents new opportunities for everyone which should be reason enough to get you excited about 2015.  Be vigilant and never let an opportunity simply pass you by.  You have to be proactive and take life head on instead of waiting for it to happen.

Always bear in mind that not everyone is given the same opportunities like you have and that opportunities may never come again so take advantage of what life has to offer because it’s better to have tried and failed than ask yourself in the end what would have been.

Don’t be afraid to test the waters and do something you’re not comfortable with because it is in these uncomfortable things that we are able to maximize our potential.  Stay out of your comfort zone if necessary.

Make Happiness a Priority

Money and material things doesn’t always equate to happiness.  Sometimes, simple things like time and freedom is all it takes for one to be happy.  Take comfort in the little things that bring you joy like time with the family, doing something you love or having some alone time because it is in these things that you get the energy to meet you goals and live your dreams.

If you’re not happy with you job anymore, why stay there?  If you’re doing something because you’re conscious of what other people will say about you, why live through the pressure?

Life is short and being miserable is not worth your time so always look for happiness where you can because as the saying goes, success is getting what you want, happiness is wanting what you get.

Stay Hungry

Don’t be contented with where you are.  Always look to improve yourself in all aspects whether professionally, personally or emotionally.  Make personal development a daily habit.  Read books and materials about motivation and success.  Learn new skills and don’t settle for mediocrity.

Go Back to Your Why

Finally, and perhaps most important of all, know your why.  Your why will give you all the answers you need when life is not turning out the way you expected to.  Why are you doing what you’re doing?

We are all motivated by different things that drive us to perform and be at our best.  It’s our purpose and if you know your purpose in life, you can never go wrong.

Why are you working so hard?  Is it because of the money? Is it because of the title?  Or is it because of family?
