Are you willing to sacrifice for your dreams?

What are you willing to sacrifice for your dreams?

What are you willing to sacrifice?

Today is Maundy Thursday here in the Philippines and the start of a long weekend.  All business establishments are closed till Black Saturday.  Many of us will be going to our favorite summer spots like beach resorts and pools to beat the summer heat and get the much needed rest we all deserve. There will also be those who will do their annual traditions like visita iglesia or church visits, watching processions, or marathon singing/chanting in Pasyons, the Philippine epic narrative of the passion, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

There are many ways to celebrate holy week but what is it’s real essence?  What is it about?  For me, the main theme of holy week is sacrifice. We abstain from eating meat which means giving up the pleasure of the good taste of food.  We abstain from the pleasures of life we normally do and share the sacrifice Jesus did for us for this was the time when Jesus was persecuted, cursed, condemned and eventually died in the cross to deliver us from our sins.  It was the time when God sacrificed His own Son for our good.

The Law of Sacrifice

The law of sacrifice states that in order to gain something of greater value, we have to give up something of lesser value.  If you want to lose weight, you have to give up either the sweets or red meat.  If you gunning for a promotion, you have to work more than the usual which means giving up time you spend going out with friends or watching television at home. No matter how big or small, giving up something is essential to achieving a goal.  We have to make changes to our routines and give up some of the things that we’ve been comfortable with to help us get to where we want to be.

Getting out of our comfort zones

When it comes to the topic of making sacrifices, comfort zone isn’t always far behind.  Getting out of your comfort zone is already a sacrifice in itself because you are foregoing “comfort”.  You are giving up the convenience of living the life you’ve been used to for a new life that incorporates your goal which is a totally different race.

Most people are afraid to get out of their comfort zones because they are not willing to give up the convenience of the life they’ve been used to.  This is also the reason why they are resistant to change.

Successful people are open-minded.   They welcome new ideas even if it meant letting go of the convenience they enjoy with their present life.

The Road to success is never convenient

People who has reached success will be the first to tell you that getting to where they are was never easy.  Jackie Robinson, the first African-American to ever play in major league baseball had to give up his pride and security when he first broke into the scene.  This was after the second world war when discrimination in America was at its peak.  He had to accept all the insults, the ridicule and threats from people who wanted him out of the team.

This is something we all go through as well.  If you’re an athlete and you want to make it big, you have to put in more time on practice which means giving up time that you could have used for socializing or having fun.  If you want your business to prosper, you have to work double-time thinking of new strategies to make it more profitable which could equate to sleepless nights and stress.

Are you willing to make sacrifices for you to reach your goal?  What are you willing to give up to achieve your dreams?

This holy week, take the time to reflect.  Make the most of the time away from work by making an assessment of where your life is now and where you want it to be and most of all, pray.

Have a blessed Holy Week everyone!

I couldn’t agree more. Getting to where you want to be is all about what you’re willing to give up to get there. Even the most basic dreams require time and effort. That means giving up time and effort you could be spending elsewhere. If you’re not willing to sacrifice something, you probably won’t be able to do very much.
