Stop worrying: Feed your mind with positive things

stop worrying

How do you keep yourself from worrying?

I was listening to an interview with the late, great Zig Ziglar and in this interview, he was asked what’s his secret for staying healthy and his short and simple answer was “I don’t worry” and I think Zig is absolutely correct in saying this because worrying not only mess with our brains, it also affects our hearts

Studies have shown that too much worrying can indeed affect our health.  It is also widely accepted that too much worrying that leads to anxiety can lower our immune system which makes us susceptible to infection and other illnesses.

This statement resonated in my mind because I used to be a negative thinker.  I worry too much.  I anticipate negative results.  Whenever I see the credit card bills and other utilities, the first thing that comes to mind is “can we pay this?”  This is immediately followed by “what if I can’t settle this?” And this is followed by a series of more what ifs which I’m sure you’ve all gone through before.

So why do we worry?  What causes us to worry about something?  The easiest answer to this question is fear.  We all have our own fears.  As parents, our primary fear is the safety of our kids.  With all the negative things happening around us, it’s all but natural for us to get worried.

Young people, especially those in their teens usually have a fear of rejection.  They worry that they won’t be accepted by their classmates or friends and this can drive them to try to be someone they’re not.

So is there a way to stop worrying?  Can this be avoided?  Is it possible to overcome our fears?

Fortunately, there is but it all starts with you.

Have a positive mindset

Positive thinking won’t let you do anything but it will make you do everything – Zig Ziglar

The most obvious way to stop worrying is to adopt a positive mindset and you can only do this by feeding your mind with all positive things.  I’ve come to realize lately that all the worries and all the stress that it’s causing me is all my fault.  Yes, you heard me right.  I felt stupid that all these time, I’ve been punishing myself for things that has not even happened and I’m not even sure will happen.  And that’s what a negative thinker does.  A negative thinker always thinks of the worst case scenario for everything.

What if don’t pass the exam?

What if I don’t get the job?

What if they don’t like me?

You have to feed your mind with positive stuff.  Instead of thinking of the worst case scenario, think of the best case scenario.  Instead of thinking what if you don’t pass, tell yourself you will pass.  Instead of saying what if you don’t get the job, tell yourself that you will get the job.

I love what Zig said about winning: Plan to win, prepare to win, expect to win.

It’s all a matter or perspective.

Always have, and never lose HOPE

When she was just a year old, there was a time when my daughter Shae couldn’t stop crying.  We didn’t know what’s wrong with her and we’ve tried everything we can to make her stop but she simply won’t and we were beginning to get worried.  We were in the province back then and we had to rush her to the hospital at the wee hours of the night.

Since the hospital was quite far we decided to bring her to the nearest clinic and when we arrived, the attending physician immediately looked after her.  She was still crying at this point and the doctor looked a bit panicked.  We were all shocked to hear him tell us that she’s beginning to turn blue and that a tube needs to be inserted in her esophagus immediately and for us to take her straight to the hospital.

I was beyond myself but still in control enough to drive but my heart was pounding non-stop.  I was praying silently while driving hoping that the doctor we first went to was wrong and that my daughter wouldn’t need to be intubated.

After a few tense minutes, the Emergency room doctor went out to meet us and told us that Shae’s going to be fine and that she just had a stomach pain.  Thank you Dr. Panic!

I would have easily given up back then but I never lost hope that it’s not as bad as it seems and that everything’s going to be fine and luckily, that’s what happened.

Hold on to your faith

Perhaps the most important way to stop worrying is to always have faith.  You don’t have to belong to a specific religion or denomination.  We all have our own beliefs but whatever group we belong to, faith will always be part of it because part of believing in something is having faith in it.  I believe in Jesus Christ and I know that He is a merciful God.  He won’t let me or my family get into harm’s way and though we encounter failure once in a while, I believe there is a reason for these failures and my faith is strong that He will help me get through them.

Everything’s lost as soon as you lose faith.  There’ll be no hope, there’ll be no positive-thinking.

Live your life one day at a time

No one knows what tomorrow will bring, not even the most popular psychics who claims to see what lies ahead.  Only God knows and being a loving and caring God, we should all feel secured that nothing bad is going to happen so stop worrying about not being able to get out of debt, stop worrying about not being able to find someone to spend the rest of your life with, stop worrying that your sickness won’t get well because we don’t know that.

Live for today and God will take care of tomorrow.

Do you worry to much for just about anything?
