The success scorecard: 8 things that makes you successful

success scorecard

How can someone be considered successful?

I’ve been listening a lot to the late, great Zig Ziglar lately and if you haven’t heard one of his speeches, I would highly recommend you take time to do so because his principles and teachings are very profound and his quotes are just awesome.  One of my favorite Zig Ziglar speech was about the success scorecard and this is what I want to share with you in this blog post.

We all have a person we look up to.  A person we idolize because of the success they’ve achieved.  It can be a celebrity, an athlete, or our own boss.  In Zig’s speech about the true measure of success, he was talking to a person who told him how he idolized his boss.  Zig asked this guy what made him admire his boss and his answer was because he thought his boss was successful.  When Zig ran this guy’s boss through the success scorecard, the guy eventually realized that the guy he admired and looked up to wasn’t as successful as he thought he was.

According to the master motivator, a person can be considered successful if he has these eight basic things:

Happiness

According to Zig, no matter how wealthy, how famous and how powerful a person is, if he is not happy, he can’t be considered successful.  A balanced lifestyle is still essential for one to really enjoy life and the fruits of his labor.  You can earn a million dollars a month, drive the most expensive cars and live in the most lavish households but if you’re depressed, stressed and lonely, these things are worthless.  The most precious things in life are those that money cannot buy.

Good Health

People work hard to earn good money but sometimes, we get caught up with work too much that we compromise our well-being.  We don’t eat on time, we don’t get enough sleep and have no time to exercise making us lose weight and worse, be prone to sickness.  We can’t enjoy the fruits of our labor if we’re lying in a hospital bed watching cable TV butt-naked.  We can’t live life to the fullest if our body begins to deteriorate and produce limitations to what we can usually do.

Prosperity

Everyone dreams of having a debt-free life.  It’s liberating to be able to buy the things you need or want without worrying if you have the money for it or if you will still have the funds after buying it.  Financial freedom is not easy to achieve but if you really want it, it’s not impossible to attain.  All it takes is sacrifice and perseverance which could mean no fancy restaurants, no new clothes and no vacations.

Security

Having the resources to support a standard of living in the present and in the future should be one of our goals.  Dave Ramsey, America’s financial guru, mentioned in his book, The Total Money Makeover the importance of having an emergency fund which should be able to cover three to six months of your expenditures in case you lose your job or get hospitalized.

Friends

Imagine partying on a luxury yacht with the best-tasting food and the most expensive wine – alone.  No matter how rich and powerful a person is, he or she will still need friends to talk to, to laugh with and tell stories with.  Even the most introvert, loner of a person needs one even via chat.  It’s a sad existence to have everything in the world that money can buy but not one person likes to have something to do with you.

Peace of mind

Can you really consider yourself a successful person if your heart is filled with hate, anger, bitterness and regret?  Forgiveness is an integral part of a person’s happiness.  Learning to forgive yourself and others sets you free from all the negative feelings mentioned above.  Move on from the failures, the setbacks, and the misunderstandings so you can live life to the fullest.

Good family relationship

The number of single parents nowadays is quite alarming and I can’t help but feel for the children of these individuals because they have been robbed of the opportunity of having a complete family.  This also goes the same for children whose parents work overseas.  Nothing comes close to the guidance and the love and care a mother and a father provides that’s why work-life balance is very important.

Hope

According to John C. Maxwell, if there’s hope in the future, there’s power in the present.  Hope is probably one, if not the most important thing among the eight we have mentioned if a person is to become successful.  Change is not possible without hope.  A person cannot see progress if he or she is hopeless.  Regardless of where you are right now, if you have hope, nothing is impossible.  It’s the one thing you should hold on to especially if you are in a dark place because without it, it’s like saying you’ve already given up.

According to Zig, if you can get a high mark for more than 4 of the things mentioned above, you can already be considered a successful person at a certain extent.  It may look as if getting high marks for each of the things mentioned above is difficult but believe me, there are people out there who has done it and I’m sure that if they can do it, you can do it too.

We need to learn to achieve the right balance among all the aspects of our lives and set our priorities correctly.  Most of all, put God above everything for He is the stabilizing factor that will help you achieve the balance you’re aiming for.

Noel, I so much agree with Zig, I also think if you are not emotionally healthy and a happy person, even if you have a lot of money, you still lack in your life and can’t be considered wholly successful!
