10 Things We Usually Take For Granted

take for granted

What are the things we take for granted?

Life unfolds so fast that we sometimes tend to overlook some of the little things.  Things we should be thankful for but we usually take for granted.  Things that other people were not blessed to have but we possess.  Things we take for granted.

It will help for us to reflect on these little things so we can learn to recognize and appreciate them and understand their importance in our lives instead of looking past them and sometimes, abusing them.

1.  Life

The fact that you still woke up this morning is already something to be thankful for.  It’s important to bear in mind that we owe each day of our existence to God and that He can take it back at any moment.

Life is precious and it is sad to see how other people give it less importance by throwing their lives away.  Life is a gift we should all treasure because time is against us.  Life is short for us to not live it to the fullest.

2.  Senses

You see the beauty of the sunrise every morning, hear your children’s laughter while they play, taste the food served in front of the dinner table, smell the roses, and feel the touch of your loved one.

What if you didn’t have one of these senses?

How will life be like?

Some people are not fortunate to be blessed with sight and some not able to hear or speak so be thankful that you are equipped with everything you need to enjoy life.

3.  Health

I feel sad for people who abuse their body through bad habits.  We only get to be young for a few years and keeping our bodies in top shape is the best we can do to prolong the strength and endurance youth has to offer.  We owe it not only to ourselves but to our families too.

I would love to be with my family for a long time.  To be in my daughter’s wedding or my son’s graduation.  I would love to see my future grand kids and that will only happen if I took care of my body now.

People spend millions to stay alive.  Do you have a million to spare?

4.  Talents and Abilities

I simply don’t believe that there’s a person without talent.  Surely, if you dig deeper, there’s something you’re good at and it doesn’t have to be something extra-ordinary.

So you can’t sing but you sure can fix computers.  You didn’t make the basketball team but you’re a good writer.  We’re all good at something.  Sometimes, we’re just too busy looking at our faults instead of our strengths.

5.  Food

I’ve always trained my kids to finish their food.  Not all of us are privileged enough to get to eat three meals in a day so leaving food on their plates is something I discourage them to do.

We’re all lucky to get to eat the most delicious food that our money can buy while others struggle to feed themselves and their families.  It would be insensitive to put extra food to waste isn’t it?

6.  Job

Okay so most of us hate our jobs but did we ever stop to think how lucky we are to have one?  Unemployment is at a very high rate today and people will give everything to get a job even if it’s not something related to the course they took in college.

Your job brings food to your table so learn to appreciate it.

7.  Education

Most of our youth today fail to realize how lucky they are to be sent to the most prestigious schools and be given the best education possible.  Instead of studying hard, they keep themselves busy with online games and social media.

Not cool!

Some people take jobs on the side to send themselves to school.  Parents sacrifice being away from their family by working abroad so they can provide good education to their children.

8.  Family

We may not realize it but sometimes, we also take our loved ones for granted.  You spend your whole day in the office and only see your family on weekends where you spend half of Saturday doing extended work and the other half sleeping.

There should always be a balance between work life and family.  Money you earned would be useless if you don’t have anyone to spend it with and for.

9.  Time

We always hear phrases like “Time is gold” and “Time is of the essence” and for me, they’re not just clichés, they’re actually true.  You cannot bring back the hands of time.  There’s no rewind or undo button that’s why we need to make the most out of our time.  Spend it wisely by being productive.

The internet is a great source of knowledge.  You can learn just about anything through a single click of your mouse.  Use it to your advantage.  Read a lot.  Discover new things.

10.  Opportunity

This is one of the things that we usually do not realize but is already right in front of us.  We should not let every opportunity just pass us by.

We are offered responsibilities that would further our careers but most of the time, we turn them down because we think we’re not prepared, we think we cannot do it and we think we’re happy where we are.  What we fail to realize is that opportunities like these do not come by often and not everyone is given a similar chance.

Life can be simple if we choose it to be.  Sometimes we get caught up with everything that’s happening that we fail to recognize the bare essentials.  Things we don’t realize we’re very lucky to have and we should  be thankful for.

Well said Noel, a great post that would serve anyone to read because we are all guilty of taking so many things for granted. I personally use every morning whilst cleaning my teeth to give thanks for as many things as I can think of, gratitude.

It is a good thing to become present as often as possible and just take notice of the wonderful things that are around us and in our lives, we truly live in a wonderful world when we take the time to see it.

A great post Noel, really enjoyed.
