20 Things You Wish You Can Tell Your Younger Self

tell your younger self

If you were given the chance, what would you tell your younger self?

“Of all the words of mice and men, the saddest are, “It might have been.”
― Kurt Vonnegut

At 36 years of age, I believe I have lived a great life so far.  I have a well-paying job, a loving wife, three beautiful kids, and house of our own.  Though life isn’t perfect for us, I can safely say that we are happy.  Yes, we struggle from time to time and yes, we still have debts to settle but I am at a point in my life right now where I believe everything is bound to get better.

We each have our own set of regrets that given the chance, we wish we could have done differently but we all know that that would be impossible.  Instead, we must live with the decisions we’ve made and leave the past behind.  But what if you were given the chance to talk to your younger self?  What if you were given the opportunity to give the younger you pieces of advice and life lessons you’ve learned throughout your entire existence?

It’s an interesting thought to imagine the possibility of such a scenario from becoming a reality so here are 20 things you can tell your younger self :

1. You are special – there will be times when you may feel inferior and weak but always bear in mind that you are what you think you are and that you should never sell yourself short.  Everyone has an equal chance of being part of history and that includes you.

2. Life is good but short – despite all the struggles and hardships you may face, life has so much to offer if you only take the time to see and enjoy it.  Study hard, work your butt off, but don’t forget to give yourself time to breathe and enjoy the sunset.

3. Be positive no matter what – life is good but there will be times when life seems to want to bring you down by giving you problem after problem after problem.  Always remember that these difficulties are temporary and they exist because you are supposed to learn something out of them and come out  a better person.  Nothing happens at random and there will always be something good behind everything that happens to you.

4. Be thankful – never forget the people who have helped you become the person you are now.  Your parents, relatives, friends and colleagues and anyone else whose life you’ve touched and has touched yours.  This includes people who may have tormented you or hurt you in some way.  They are part of who you are and no matter how they have affected you, be it positive or negative, you are what you are today because of them.

5. Be brave and don’t be afraid to try new things – most of us are afraid of the unknown and this fear also keeps us from achieving the happiness and success we are searching for.  You won’t progress if you continue to do the same thing everyday.  Take calculated risks, try doing something new and get better at it.

6. There are still good people around you – despite all the negative things that’s happening around us, always remember that there are still good people.  People who are willing to help and genuinely care.  While it’s understandable to doubt other people’s intentions, everyone deserves a chance to prove their worth.

7. There will also be people who will try to take advantage of you – While there are people who are naturally good, there will also be people who will try to take advantage of you and pull you down.  Learn to say NO and set boundaries if you have to.

8. Don’t be sensitive to criticism – No matter how good a person you are, there will always be people who will say bad things about you.  Don’t get discouraged when they do.  Instead of feeling bad, prove critics wrong by being at your best.  Show them what you’re really made of and let them eat their words!

9. Dream big – Don’t be content living an ordinary life.  Nothing is impossible if you work hard on reaching for your goals.  Dreaming is free so why settle for a smaller dream when you can go big?

Actor Jim Carrey dreamed of becoming a successful comedian and earning 10 million dollars per picture.  He stuck to that dream and worked hard to become one of the best comedians of all time.  In 1995, he earned 20 million dollars for the movie The Cable Guy, ten million dollars more than what he originally dreamed of.

10. Don’t be afraid to fail – Nobody’s perfect so stop trying to be one.  Everyone fails and you should never be ashamed if you make one because it is through these failures that we learn.  It’s how we become good at something.

Business guru and best-selling author of several books Seth Godin received 900 rejection letters from publishers before finally getting published.  That’s not just one failure, that’s 900!

11. Stay humble – Don’t let your achievements or small successes get into your head.  Stay humble and stay small.  Keep your feet on the ground and don’t ever forget to look back to where you came from.  Treat everyone with respect and fairness.

12. Be patient – It may take some time for some of your goals to come into fruition and it is at these instances where your patience will come in handy.  Always remember that good things come to he who waits.

13. Be intentional – If you want something so bad, you will do everything it takes to get it.  Take action if you want to achieve your goals and work with the thought that no one’s coming to help you and that you and you alone have the power to obtain whatever it is you are after.

14. Value your relationships – Be kind to everyone you meet and treasure the relationships you built because we live in a small world and you are bound to encounter the very same people in the future.  Don’t ever burn bridges.

15. Make time for self-improvement – Instead of spending several hours sitting in front of the television, read self-help books for a change.  Attend seminars or work shops to improve your skills.  Learning should be a continuous process if you want to be marketable.

16. Find work that you love – One of the sources of discontentment among employees is the lack of passion in performing their job function.  Look beyond money when choosing a career.  Find something that sparks your interest and one you actually enjoy instead of staying on a job and wasting years you could have otherwise used on something you are actually good at.

17. Life would not be complete without a family of your own – One of the best decisions I’ve made in my life was to marry my wife and have kids that we truly adore.  Nothing beats the great feeling of having people waiting for you at the door after a hard day’s work.  That’s priceless!

18. Spend your money wisely – Save money as early as you can  by spending it wisely.  Only buy things that you need and buy less of those that will only give you temporary pleasure.  Do not be a slave to credit cards and put your money in worthy investments.

19. Take good care of your body – It is okay to grab a few beers occasionally with friends but do it in moderation.  Too much alcohol and smoking can have long-term effects on your health.  Eat the right kind of food and exercise daily.

20. Believe in your abilities – It would be impossible to achieve success or even small wins for that matter if you do not have faith in yourself in the first place.  You eat the same food as Steve Jobs did.  Like Bill Gates, you also sleep for eight hours,  Whatever the highly successful people can do, you can too but you have to believe that first before you can start your journey towards success.
