Today Matters: 9 Uplifting Things to Tell Yourself When You Wake Up

Are you making the most out of the opportunities each day presents?

“Opportunities will come and go, but if you do nothing about them, so will you.”
― Richie Norton, The Power of Starting Something Stupid: How to Crush Fear, Make Dreams Happen, and Live Without Regret

Take Advantage of Today

Busy doesn’t even begin to describe how our days are.  The more appropriate adjective to use would have to be hectic or toxic especially for those of us who has a full-time job by day and then a second job as hands on parents by night.  You begin your day by getting the kids ready for school, you brave the never-ending rush hour traffic on the way to work, do your job for more than nine hours then go through an hour or two of traffic once again.  Upon getting home, you prepare the meal and help the kids with their homework before putting them all to bed.

Typing the sentences above is tiring enough and living life the same way everyday can be all the more exhausting.  It’s easy to overlook, if not take advantage of all the opportunities that each day presents.  Living life in such exhausting way causes us to dread each day instead of looking forward to it.  Stop for a few minutes and think.  What are you missing out on?

Here are some of the things you should tell yourself as soon as you open your eyes every morning.

1. Blessings await me today

Instead of looking at each day as a punishment that’s about to come your way, why not welcome it and the opportunities it is about to bring?  Look for the blessings you are bound to receive and the endless possibilities it presents rather than looking for things to hate about.

As Murphy’s law states, whatever can go wrong, will go wrong and you are giving Murphy the opportunity to ruin your day by entertaining the thought.  Be positive.  Get excited and look forward to what each day brings.

2. Today is an opportunity to learn new things

Experience is indeed the best teacher and with each day come new experiences that leave valuable lessons that you can use as reference.  It doesn’t matter if it’s a bad experience or a good one.  Both will benefit you in the long run.

Treasure the good experiences and learn from the bad ones.  Always have in mind that failure is necessary for you to reach success and every mistake you make has a valuable lesson in store.

3. Today is an opportunity to make yourself better

Learning is a continuous process and even if you have reached the point where you think you know everything there is to know, you should not stay complacent and continue to grow.  There is no age limit when it comes to learning and with today’s technological advances, learning materials has never been more accessible.

Read motivational and personal development books or blogs (such as this one), listen to CDs, audio books and podcasts, go to YouTube and watch how image-editing is done in Photoshop.  Everything you need is right at your fingertips.

4. Today is an opportunity to build meaningful relationships

Every person you meet and work with in some way has a significant effect in your life.  You may not see or feel it now but we live in a small world and the chances of working with the same person again is not a remote possibility.

Build relationships with the people you come across whether its someone you share a ride with everyday, the lobby security guard, or the maintenance person assigned to fix your room’s air conditioning, always be respectful and kind.  Be humble and treat everyone fairly.

5. Today is an opportunity to be a blessing to others

Isn’t it gratifying to make somebody else smile because of a good deed you’ve done for them?  Make it a habit to do a single act of kindness every day and it doesn’t have to be something big.  A simple appreciation of a job well done by a colleague or helping an old person cross the street should be enough.

To quote the great Zig Ziglar: “You can have everything in life you want if you just help enough other people get what they want.”

6. Today can be the day when that one big break you’re waiting for will come

People make their own luck and every successful person will tell you that there’s no such thing as bad luck but only lazy people.  I totally agree with this but you can’t deny that there are really days when it seems like all the stars have aligned at the perfect time to make your goals a reality.  There are days when every circumstance seems to agree with you and that nothing can go wrong.  Most of all, there is that one day when that one break, that big opportunity you’ve been waiting for will just come to you when you least expect it.   It can come at any day so be ready when it does.

7. Today is an opportunity to re-connect with someone from your past

We all love nostalgia and conversations about reliving the past is a favorite topic for most of us.  Old friends, high school buddies, and former colleagues are no longer hard to find (unless they’re intentionally hiding) with social media easily accessible from just about anywhere and with the gadget of your choice.

Have lunch or dinner with a childhood friend, catch up and stay connected.  Your fondest memories need not stay as it is…memories.

8. Today is an opportunity to develop new hobbies

Part of personal growth is to develop and enjoy new hobbies.  If running four miles every morning has become boring for you, maybe it’s time to try biking or hiking perhaps.  Finding a hobby you love doing is very important in striking a balance between work and personal life.

Look for something productive and therapeutic or something that would require physical activity or analytic thinking.

9. This is going to be a great day!

Thinking positive about everything makes a lot of difference.  Once you’ve conditioned your mind that everything will be okay and that there’s nothing to worry about, I don’t see any reason your day will turn out for the worse.  Life may not be perfect but it can be better than it normally is and that’s all up to you.

There’s always a choice and how your day pans out depends on the choices you make.

Over to You

Life is short.  Life is fast and if you are not intentional enough, everything will just pass you by.  Make the most out of every day you’re given.  Live life to the fullest because as you may all know, we are living on borrowed time and it would be such a shame to put it to waste by dwelling on the negative and being miserable every time.  Do what makes you happy, enjoy the little things and make each day count.

What do you tell yourself when you wake up in the morning?
