5 Things to Remember if You’re Not (Yet) Where You Intended to Be

where you intended to

Are you where you intended to be? What would you do if you aren’t?

“When defeat comes, accept it as a signal that your plans are not sound, rebuild those plans, and set sail once more toward your coveted goal.”
― Napoleon Hill, Think and Grow Rich

We all have our own versions of our ideal lives.  We all want to have illustrious careers, complete and happy families, and lives of abundance.

When I graduated from college back in 1999, my goals were set about how I wanted my life to unfold.  I’ve envisioned myself to be working on a high-paying job and in one of the top positions of a company.  I saw myself driving a fancy car on my way to work and back home where my wife and kids are waiting for me in our beautiful house.  Every now and then we would go on vacation and be able to acquire whatever we need.

That was my dream.  The perfect life I’ve always wanted and looking back, I’m proud to say that most of them have already come true.  I have an amazing wife and three wonderful kids, we have our own home and car (though it’s not as fancy as it was in my dream), and we’re able to go on vacation from time-to-time (although not as often as I wished it was).

Career-wise, I think I’m not yet there.  Though I am in a management position already, I don’t think I’ve made it to where I originally intended to.  I got into debt just a year ago and that wasn’t definitely part of the plan which simply says, I haven’t realized all my goals yet.

Many of us haven’t arrived yet, so to speak.  You’re probably not where you intended to be as of this writing but this shouldn’t make you sad or disappointed.  It will all happen at the right time and while you’re waiting, here are 5 helpful things to bear in mind:

1. It’s Never Too Late

Zig Ziglar didn’t get to be THE Zig Ziglar right up until his late 40’s.  The great thing about success is that it has no deadline so whether you are in your 40’s or 50’s or even in your 60’s, don’t give up on your dreams and goals just yet.  It’s too early!

You can still arrive at your intended destination by just keeping your eye on the prize and never quitting on them.  You only failed when you say you did and most people who does are those who quit.

2. Take Responsibility

If you’re not where you intended to be, it is not because of bad luck nor is it because of bad circumstances.  You’re not where you are because of you.  Maybe you didn’t put on the work needed, maybe you spent more time watching television than working on your dream, maybe you listened to other people’s criticism instead of being firm with your beliefs.

We will always have our own excuses for not making it but you will never move forward unless you take responsibility.  We have to own up to our mistakes and learn from them because we will never learn anything from these experiences until we accept whole-heartedly that it was our fault.

3. Remain Hopeful

It can take 10 years, 20 years or 40 years but regardless of how long it may take, the one thing you can be sure of is that it CAN happen and it WILL happen but that all depends on you.

I personally believe that life is like a wheel.  There are times when you will be on top and there will be times when you’ll be at the bottom and based on experience, I can say that no one remains at the bottom forever.

The time will come when you’ll be at the top but for that to happen, you have to take action and have a tremendous amount of hope inside you because the moment you lose hope, then it’s GAME OVER.

Trust me, I’ve experienced this first-hand and I’m telling you, hope wouldn’t fail you if you just hold on to it.

4. Be Intentional

Sometimes we get too comfortable with life that we just let everything pass us by.  We let life happen in front of us and let it take us to a certain direction that we may or may not have wanted to go.

If you really want to meet all your goals and get to where you intended to, you have to be intentional.  You have to take charge of where you want to go and how you want to live your life.

If you’re not seeing traction in your chosen career, take action and make the adjustments.  If your family life is not as good as you wanted it to be, do something about it, talk to your family and spend more time with them. If you’re struggling and buried in debt, make the change in your lifestyle and spending habits.

If you really want to get to where you intended to, you have to be the driver and not the passenger.

5. Imagine you’re there

What would it feel like to realize your dreams?  What would it feel like to hold a million dollars in your hand?  What would it feel like to drive your dream car or be on your dream vacation with the family?

The mind is a very powerful tool if put into good use.  Ever heard of the saying “you become what you think”?

It is absolutely true so instead of feeding your mind with negative thoughts, why not fill it with positive things, specifically, you realizing all of your goals.

One of the things I learned from famed author Jack Canfield is the use of a vision board.  What you’ll do is create a collage of all the things you want in one board.  You can put the picture of your dream car, your dream house, and your dream vacation.

Hang that board somewhere you can see it, perhaps in your room or right by the refrigerator.  Look at it before you start your day everyday.  Imagine how it feels like to actually have them.  Make these thoughts motivate you towards your goals.

Over to You

It’s okay if you haven’t arrived to where you intended to.  You have all the time in the world to still get there and enjoy everything you’ve ever dreamed of and set out to achieve.  Setbacks are bound to happen but the most important thing you have to remember is how bad do you want it?

Are you passionate about getting there or are you just interested because if you really want it so bad then you won’t stop until you get there but if you’re only interested, chances are you will quit the moment you encounter your first defeat.

So, are you where you intended to be?  If not, how do you plan on getting there?

Really good tips Noel. You pretty much covered it all. I know I put forth the effort however I think its more my mindset or my vision that I feel I am clear on, however do not revisit the thoughts (or vizualise) as often as I probably should. Good food for thought and thanks for sharing!

Very inspirational post Noel. Never too late — don’t lose hope. I’d take that one step further — turn that hope into belief. Really enjoyed this post. I have a vision board and have attained many of the things on it. Glad you mentioned it because it needs to be updated.

Thanks Carol! Glad you enjoyed this. Having a vision board really helps because its motivating and it drives you to action without you knowing it.

  4. Thibaut Meurisse

Thanks Noel. That’s a great reminder. I sometimes like to play the victim but I realize that taking full responsibility for your life is one of the most important thing we can do to make it better. Nothing change until we accept that we do have responsibility regarding our current situation.
Also I really believe that remaining hopeful is only possible when we are really passionate about what we are doing and can wait for years before getting where we want to be. As Steve Jobs says you must love what you do. Actually, rather than talking about “hope” which is a kind of passive thing, I prefer talking about “belief”, having the strong belief that you will get where you will eventually get where you want to be.

    I appreciate your reminder 😉

Appreciate the kind words Thibaut! I’m glad it helped in its own little way.

    Hi Noel

I am working on so many of these things so hard at the moment. Both my husband and I have recently been made redundant so I am working my online business and also hunting for jobs. We are taking responsibility so we can continue to live the life we desire. I have to work hard on the actual visioning so I really do need to get that board out and see the physical pictures to help me get there.

    Thank you for this reminder

I am glad it helped in its own little way Leonie. Sorry to hear about the redundancy issue. Just hang in there. Everything will be all right. Keep moving forward and always have hope. Sometimes, there are bigger opportunities hidden in the most trying times.

    Hi Noel

What an awesome post and a great reminder that I should not give up.

There are goals that I have sorted out which have not happened yet but I am still working towards making it a reality. Thanks for sharing. Take Care.

Most of my goals have not be realized yet either bro and that inspired me to write this piece. The battle is not ove. We have a long way to go but all of these goals will become a reality soon.

I love these tips Noel! It doesn’t matter when you started working towards your dreams and desires, it’s NEVER too late.

Giving up is absolutely NOT an option. You have to keep moving forward no matter what others say.

    Thanks for sharing that!

Glad you liked the tips Jelena. Many of us feel that our time has passed and the opportunities we let go will no longer come by but like you said, it’s never too late unless you say it is. It’s all up to us.

Love the tips Noel and a great reminder to keep pressing forward! There’s a saying I love: “Keep going UNTIL.”
And more specifically, that’s UNTIL you reach your goals.
    Thanks for the great post!

  10. Kahnie

Great post Noel! Really motivational and good tips to follow. I’ve worked hard all of my life and am not where I intended to be. I use to tell myself I can’t complain because I have a good job but I realize a good job is not good enough and I deserve to live the life I truly want. Thanks for sharing.

Absolutely agree with you Kahnie. We may think we have it all but when you really want something so bad, you will realize that there’s more to accomplish than what we already have and when this time comes, we all have to be bold and intentional with our actions.

Thanks and I’m glad you liked this post!

Really appreciate your honesty Noel. As someone who is very close, but not quite there, it’s refreshing to hear.
Also really liked your Zig Ziglar example. It’s easy to think that you’re getting too old to enjoy success but when you get there, that’s the last thing on your mind.
